  • I am sick of watching people be pushed over a cliff with the very words intended to lead them away from it and people acting all shocked like, WHAT happened?! When it is plain as day obvious if you look at it with our "Behavioral Communication" glasses on.

  • I am sick of seeing crisis' triggered when a single sentence shift could have avoided it.

  • I am done letting communication professionals ignore how exponentially more effective human science makes engagement because we have scary high-school chemistry flashbacks. (I have them, too!)

  • That is why I am done letting this knowledge only be my team's proprietary intelligence, and my client's superpower. 

  • The pen is mightier than the sword, indeed. For the pen can restore, rebuild, and create.

Getting It Right Matters

Why I Began Studying Psychological Communication

From the first day of my professional communication career, it seemed absurd to me that we (communicators and humanity) engage with next to no consideration of psychology.

 

That is why I tried to declare "Psychological Communication" as my college major despite, to my existential frustration, it not existing.

 

So instead, in my career, and in the firm I have owned now for 20 years, I created it myself, merging knowledge from human sciences with the practice of professional, strategic communication.

 

I do not believe humanity can communicate to the best of our ability without paying attention to the psychological and behavioral impact of our communication.

 

We have an impact whether we intend to or not.

 

Communication impacts emotion, behavior, and choice whether we are aware of how to do so successfully, or not. 

 

By not making this an intentional field of study, we are doomed to stumble in a state of collective fog about how our words interlace with human behavior.

Because about 15 years ago, something started to happen.

 

Like lighting across a night sky that turns dark to day, the fields of behavioral sciences, neuroscience, and behavioral economics began uncovering fascinating insights into how the human mind responds to communication.

 

And they all began doing it from So. Many. Directions. At. Once. For the few of us following with a magnifying glass, a blueprint of the map of human communication preferences was unfurling before us.

 

My team and I have been carefully, nerdily, and happily studying this science, and applying it to the practice of professional, strategic communication, public relations, and crisis communication to increase results since we opened our doors in 2001.
